At times this season has been a battle for Manchester City. Injuries and a mid-season slump have cost Pep Guardiola’s side. But there are positives to take from a difficult season for City. The rise of Nico O’Reilly in recent weeks is one. Another is the strong form of Josko Gvardiol this season. The Croatian international has now become one of Manchester City’s important players based on his performances this season.
As Manchester City’s defenders have battled injuries all season long, Josko Gvardiol has been ever-present for Pep Guardiola’s side. He’s made 49 appearances in all competitions this season. He’s also scored 6 goals and added 2 assists. The ability of Gvardiol to always be available for his team is commendable. His durability has been key for Pep Guardiola’s side.
This season Josko Gvardiol has played at left-back and as a centre-back. At left-back his ability to be an attacking weapon is crucial. Gvardiol is blessed with tremendous technical ability and can pick out a pass. His eye for goal is also an important weapon to his game and for his team. He is also a good defender at left-back, although Gvardiol made several costly errors earlier in the season.
In recent weeks Josko Gvardiol has formed a strong defensive pairing with Ruben Dias. Playing at centre-back has brought out the best in Gvardiol. His ability to time a challenge has stood out. His pace at the back is also key. There is a strong argument to be made that Gvardiol should play primarily as a centre-back next season.
When you look at it now, Josko Gvardiol is one of Manchester City’s most important players. His form this season has seen him take that status. The Croatian international is only 23 years of age and has his best football ahead of him. But he is now one of City’s most important players. If he can carry his strong form from this season into next season the sky is the limit for what he could become.
