Late last week, it was reported by Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail that Nottingham Forest were interested in signing Rico Lewis. Manchester City do need to let players go to trim the size of Pep Guardiola’s squad. But if City were to sell Rico Lewis, it would be a major surprise. The England international is an important member of the Manchester City squad. His ability to play at right-back or midfield, on top of his technical ability, makes him an essential player for his team.
Rico Lewis impressed yesterday during Manchester City’s 4-nil win over Wolves. He grabbed an assist and stepped into midfield when required and excelled. Lewis was substituted during the second half after an impressive performance. The England international also spoke about his future after his impressive start to the new season. He has no interest in leaving Manchester City, which is great news.
In an interview with Tyrone Marshall, for Manchester Evening News, Rico Lewis was asked about the possibility of leaving Manchester City this summer. Lewis stated that he had no interest in leaving the club despite Nottingham Forest’s interest in signing him. He explained: “For me, I’ve never, ever seen myself at a different club. I’ve always wanted to play for City. It’s my dream club, and like you see today, when I’m playing with the kind of players that I’m playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I’m so happy.”
The England international added that it is on him to earn a place in Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup. Lewis knows he must play well to keep his place in the team. Lewis added: “It’s difficult. Everyone wants assurance and security, but at the end of the day, it’s on me. It’s on me to perform. It’s on me to take the chances. If I take my own chances, I do it. If I don’t, then I have to work and get better.”
Based on Rico Lewis’s comments, there is no chance of him leaving Manchester City. He has put to bed the notion that he could leave the club. That is good news for City. It did seem to be a strange move for City to contemplate selling the England international. Lewis has risen through the academy at the club and he appears destined for a long career at City.
It would seem that if players are to leave Manchester City to trim the size of Pep Guardiola’s squad, Rico Lewis won’t be one of those. That is the best outcome as other players seem a better fit to leave City rather than Rico Lewis. Hopefully the speculation around Lewis’ future will end and he can build on his impressive display at Molineux yesterday.
