Max Crocombe has received strong criticism online from Millwall supporters for his performance in the 2-2 with Middlesbrough

Millwall have had a tricky start to the 2026/27 campaign, as Lions supporters will point to their long list of injuries affecting their performances, though some are pointing the finger at one unfortunate player in particular.

Millwall began the new Championship campaign with a 2-0 away victory over Bristol City and followed that up with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Norwich City, as the Lions look to be in and amongst the play-off picture once again.

However, in the five league games since, Millwall have won just one, as the injury list has begun to pile up, leaving head coach Alex Neil few options to choose from.

Among the array of absentees is Danish goalkeeper Lukas Jensen, who is out for a 'considerable period' after pulling his quad in training, with New Zealand international Max Crocombe stepping in as cover.

Crocombe, 33, has had something of a journeyman career before joining Millwall in the summer of 2025, playing for the likes of Salford City, Grimsby Town, and Burton Albion, and after Jensen suffered an Achilles injury last year, he stepped in between the sticks.

According to FotMob, he prevented 4.36 goals in the Championship across 23 games last season, but was still replaced in January by the loan signing of Anthony Patterson.

Now, Crocombe has been called upon once again, and it would be fair to suggest things haven't exactly gone as well as he or Millwall supporters would have hoped.

As many as ten first-team players missed Millwall's 2-2 with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, including the likes of Josh Coburn, Mihailo Ivanovic, Casper De Norre, Tristan Crama, Alfie Doughty, and Mathis Servais, as well as Jensen, all of whom would have almost certainly been in the squad if fit.

Millwall took a two-goal lead before half-time and seemed to be on their way to three points, had it not been for two second-half goals from Amario Cozier-Duberry and Will Lankshear, with Crocombe receiving criticism for his role in the draw.

It's a pretty damning state of affairs for Crocombe, who has gone from his country's number one at the World Cup to potentially third-choice option at Millwall in a matter of months.

Whether Neil will keep faith in him for much longer remains to be seen, though it would be no surprise to see Filip Marschall between the sticks sooner rather than later.

Whilst Millwall's recent struggles cannot solely be attributed to Crocombe's performances, he certainly hasn't been at the level required for a team chasing the top eight.

The Kiwi has previously displayed his capability between the sticks at The Den, though his displays can surely no longer be ignored by Neil, who may have to take him out of the firing line for his own good.

Marschall, who was signed from Stevenage in the summer, is likely next to be tested in goal if Crocombe is indeed dropped, as Neil has a big decision to make ahead of their riveting home clash with bitter rivals West Ham United.
