The MLS is a soccer league that tries to target the biggest names in soccer. A few years ago, this was considered impossible; however, the arrival of Lionel Messi changed every thought about the tournament.

As a result, many teams began signing players such as Heung-Min Son, Thomas Muller, Marco Reus, or  Rodrigo De Paul, among others.

That’s why, whenever star players announce their departure from European clubs, the MLS is often first in line to sign them.

Now, according to the Spanish newsletter MARCA, the Chicago Fire confirmed its interest in signing Robert Lewandowski.

Gregg Berhalter confirms Chicago Fire interest in Robert Lewandowski

Gregg Berhalter, head coach for the Chicago Fire, confirmed the club's interest in signing the Polish striker in the next transfer window.

After becoming LaLiga champions, Lewandowski didn’t extend his contract with FC Barcelona, meaning he is a free agent and open to listening to different clubs around the world.

During a conference, Berhalter confirmed: “I can speak freely because he is no longer a Barcelona player, or will soon cease to be, and he is someone we want to bring in.”

This rumor first emerged last December, but negotiations between both parties have intensified over the past few weeks. Chicago Fire’s head coach has stated that discussions with the player are ongoing.

“We have spoken with Robert Lewandowski and with the people who represent him. I am convinced that a player of his level has other offers on the table, but our communication has been frequent and very positive.”

In the current season, the Fire is standing third in the Eastern Conference, and the signing of Robert Lewandowski post-World Cup will boost the team's chances of competing for the MLS Cup.

During this year, the former Bayern Munich striker played 46 games, while scoring 19 goals and delivering four assists.

Although this hasn’t been its finest season, Berhalter trusts that the Polish player could be a game-changer not only for the team but also for the league.

"We believe it would be an extraordinary signing for the club, for Chicago, and for the entire league. A player of his caliber would elevate our project to another level."
