When did you start supporting Genoa and why?

I started supporting Genoa the minute I was born. It's a family tradition - I believe my great, great uncle was the last president to actually win the league with Genoa. So red and blue is very much the colour of my DNA.

What’s been your favourite memory of supporting Genoa?

I have two. One was going to see Genoa against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup with my father. We actually ended up beating them at Anfield, which was the first time an Italian club had done that.My greatest memory now is two seasons ago.

I took my son when Genoa was in Serie B for the last game of the season, which got them promoted. That was the first time he ever went to a real football game, the first time he ever went to see Genoa and it was unbelievable. We sat with the whole team and to watch them get promoted from Serie B to Serie A, for a general fan, is pretty much the next best thing to winning the Champions League. So that was amazing.

Do you think Genoa have what it takes to stay in Serie A come the end of the season?

I think Genoa will stay in Serie A. Losing Patrick Vieira was a bit of a blow - I loved him, but I think he had maybe lost the dressing room and definitely the club. It just seemed that the fans had also turned against him, which is never great at Genoa, which is one of the oldest fan bases in Italy and a very strong fanbase. There's no reason why we shouldn't stay up.

The squad is there, but with the way we’ve been playing and the system they've got right now it's definitely not going to be enough to keep us in Serie A. It’s a shame to see teams like us and Fiorentina fighting for survival, but that's Serie A today.

How excited are you to have Daniele De Rossi in charge?

I’m a big fan of De Rossi. I've experienced many glorious nights as an Italian fan thanks to De Rossi, so I will forever be grateful to him. I'm glad to have him on the bench. I think he'll bring something to help us stay up.

Tell us about your new single Do It For Love

This was a song I wrote with a very dear friend of mine, Miles Kane - another big football man. We ended up writing it kind of without any intention, without any purpose or any reason. It was just something we wanted to do. It was sort of one of those things where we both tapped into our subconscious together, as we do when we hang out and we romanticise about romance itself.

The thing I love most about this song is that it was only when I took it on the road this summer and played it live, that I realised what it was about. It's not a love song. It's a song about doing whatever it is you do in life, whether it be play football, support a football team, find the woman or man of your dreams or the way you look into the eyes of your children and the way you approach every day.

The best way to approach it is to do it for love. That was a real moment I had on stage when I sang this for the first time and realised that sometimes you ask yourself, “What are you doing up here? Why am I here?”. I know the answer now is I'm here because I do it for love, and that's what this song is about.
