After the winter break, there was much to suggest that Munich would make a breakthrough, but the title fight has taken on new tension. Two Bayern slip-ups have brought Borussia Dortmund back into the race.
Borussia Dortmund have reduced the gap to FC Bayern to three points. BVB are on 48 points after the 21st matchday, while Munich lead on 51 points – albeit with one game less. On Sunday, the record champions can pull away again to six points in their home game against TSG Hoffenheim.
The fact that Dortmund are back within striking distance is due to Bayern’s recent results. The first defeat of the season against Augsburg two weeks ago and the subsequent 2-2 draw at Hamburger SV cost them a valuable lead. While Munich were suddenly discussing losing points, BVB were constantly collecting points and gradually working their way closer.
Dortmund’s most recent three-pointer was anything but commanding. Niko Kovac’s team were lucky on several occasions after the break in their 2-1 away win in Wolfsburg, as VfL missed numerous chances and twice hit the aluminum. It was only a late goal from Serhou Guirassy that decided the game in favor of the Black & Yellows.

The pressure is now back on FC Bayern, with the club’s management making a strikingly offensive statement ahead of the clash with Hoffenheim. Head of Sport Max Eberl said: „We’re looking forward to the game against TSG, who I see as the surprise team.“ He added about the opponents: „They’ve risen like a phoenix from the ashes and have put together a very good team.“
Vincent Kompany is also expecting an intense game. The Bayern coach emphasised: „We’ve always shown that if a team wants to bring this intensity, we’re up for it and play a good game.“ And with regard to the style of play of both teams, he made it clear: „I always think it’s good when the opposing team brings this intensity. It’s also good for the fans.“ His conclusion: „We’re up for this game because it’s a strength of ours, but also of theirs.“
Looking ahead, FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund will face off head-to-head at Signal-Iduna-Park in three weeks‘ time on 28 February. By then, Munich will have the opportunity to widen the gap again – Dortmund have at least opened the gap with their victory at VfL Wolfsburg.
