Dominik Szoboszlai’s New Contract Is Liverpool’s Most Important Piece of Business

Liverpool’s decision to hand Dominik Szoboszlai a new five-year contract may prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business they complete this summer.

While new signings naturally dominate the headlines, securing one of the club’s most valuable assets before uncertainty begins to creep into his contractual situation is every bit as important.

Szoboszlai still had two years remaining on his previous deal, yet Liverpool have acted decisively.

That feels significant.

After watching both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konaté leave upon the expiration of their respective contracts over the past two summers, the club simply could not afford another high-profile situation to drift into the final 12 months.

Lessons have clearly been learned.

I suspect Liverpool’s hierarchy will now adopt a far more aggressive contract strategy. Players reaching the two-year mark on their deals will almost certainly be presented with new terms, and if an agreement cannot be reached, difficult decisions may follow.

The alternative is allowing valuable assets to depreciate before potentially walking away for nothing.

That cannot become the norm.

Richard Hughes deserves enormous credit for moving early.

Without knowing Szoboszlai’s long-term intentions, Liverpool’s sporting director would have found it extremely difficult to shape the squad for Andoni Iraola’s first season.

Planning recruitment is impossible if uncertainty surrounds one of the first names on the team sheet.

Now, Liverpool have clarity.

One of their leaders remains committed to the project, allowing Hughes and the recruitment team to focus their attention elsewhere.

It also sends a powerful message throughout the dressing room.

The new era is being built around players who are fully invested in Liverpool’s future.

Iraola Now Has a Midfield Leader Around Which to Build

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Szoboszlai’s new contract is the flexibility it provides Andoni Iraola.

The Hungarian captain is one of the few players in Liverpool’s squad capable of excelling in multiple positions without diminishing his influence on matches.

His natural role remains as an attacking midfielder, operating as the number 10 behind the centre-forward.

From there, his energy, creativity and relentless pressing make him an ideal fit for Iraola’s demanding style of football. He can link midfield with attack, arrive late into the penalty area and lead Liverpool’s press from the front.

However, there is another intriguing possibility.

With Mohamed Salah now departed, the right-wing position remains one of the biggest questions facing Liverpool.

Rather than immediately signing a direct replacement, Iraola may choose to deploy Szoboszlai from the right, allowing him to drift inside while providing greater physicality, defensive intensity and outstanding crossing ability.

It would create a very different dynamic to the one Liverpool enjoyed under Salah, but perhaps one that better suits the collective style Iraola wants to implement.

Wherever he plays, one thing feels certain.

Szoboszlai will become one of the defining figures of this new Liverpool.

His professionalism, leadership qualities and relentless work ethic make him an obvious candidate to become the club’s next vice-captain, a role that would further underline his growing importance within the dressing room.

I also believe this contract extension could act as the catalyst for Liverpool’s transfer activity.

With one of the squad’s cornerstone players now secured for the long term, Hughes can move forward with complete clarity over the remaining areas that require strengthening.

The transfer window has been patient rather than explosive, but I expect that to change very quickly.

Securing Dominik Szoboszlai was not simply about rewarding last season’s Player of the Year.

It was about providing certainty.

And certainty is often the foundation upon which successful transfer windows are built.
