L'Équipe reports that a remarkable scene unfolded in National on Friday as Orléans midfielder Grégory Berthier went in goal against Sochaux and saved a penalty.

The drama began in the 12th minute when goalkeeper Charly Jan fluffed a clearance, then felled a Sochaux attacker in the area and was sent off. It came in the 18th round, with Orléans fourth and Sochaux third.

With National limiting teams to five substitutes, Orléans had not named a reserve goalkeeper on the teamsheet, so Berthier pulled on the gloves.

He kept out Boubacar Fofana’s spot-kick to his right.

Reality bit soon after, with the stand-in conceding twice in quick succession.
