Enzo Maresca’s outburst on Saturday was bizarre not only because it was unexpected, but also because nobody knew quite who it was aimed at. His follow up in Monday’s press conference was even more cryptic.
Well, we all know the best connected person in football when you want something reliably sourced on these matters – David Ornstein. He went on NBC Sport to explain what he had been told about the comments.

“Perhaps he’s unhappy with the sporting leadership at Stamford Bridge… there was a run of four winless games… there will have been regular meetings taking place [after the defeats] and perhaps something that was said that he didn’t like,” Ornstein speculated.
“He’s been emboldened to speak more forthrightly as a result of the progress and success he’s been a part of. Earlier this year he hired so called super agent Jorge Mendes to represent him – maybe that’s with an eye to the future.”
Ornstein also points out that Chelsea would take a “dim view” of these sorts of disruptions continuing, and points out that there will be a review of Maresca’s situation at the end of the season. All of this seems to be pointing in one direction – and it’s a departure for the coach come the summer.
There’s a lot of season left, but things are getting hot already.
You can see Ornstein speaking in the clip embedded here:
Chelsea won over Everton on Saturday, and one of their star players was Trevoh Chalobah, who is growing into more and more of a leader.
Chalobah didn’t get into the team of the week generated by WhoScored’s stats, but two of his teammates did, and you can find out who that was here.
