Chelsea’s latest deal to sign a talented young player came from absolutely nowhere. We honestly can’t remember a deal which had so little buzz around it before being completed.
In the middle of the night Fabrizio Romano called it a done deal, and David Ornstein then followed up this morning with the details of the deal for the Athletic.
It’s such an unusual time of year to complete moves that perhaps it’s no surprise that everyone was caught out. It’s also an unusual deal stricture. The 17 year old Quenda has completed a medical and a deal is effectively done – but he won’t join for another year. After breaking into the Sporting CP team this season, the Blues don’t want to interrupt his excellent development, and so are leaving him there on loan until July 2026 when he will be 18.
He then comes to Stamford Bridge with a 7 year contract in place. We’ve gazumped Manchester United, who had appointed Ruben Amorim, the man who gave Quenda his debut, and looked at him in January.
Interestingly, Ornstein even has information on how we will use the wide man, who has played as a wing back too – “Chelsea intend to deploy him as a pure winger.”

There is no mention of what incentives are included in the fee for playing Quenda, but there are likely to be some add-ons triggered by continued appearances for his current club, much as there were with Estevao Willian and other players we’ve signed far in advance of their arrival.
This prevents a situation like the one we had with Christian Pulisic some years ago, where Borussia Dortmund stopped playing him and started leaving him on the bench the moment a deal was done to move him to Chelsea.
