Sunderland’s pursuit of Victor Muñoz could be complicated, with CA Osasuna intent on holding out for about £34 million. Diario de Noticias reports the winger is close to a first senior Spain call-up after Nico Williams’ injury, with games against Argentina and Egypt later this month, and adds RCD Mallorca prospect Jan Virgili is also under consideration.

“We didn’t even listen to them bids; we stuck to the clause. It’s also true, and I want to emphasise this, that he’s very grateful to the club. We brought him in from the Primera RFEF [Real Madrid First Division], where he’d only played 40 minutes in La Liga, and we paid €5million. I told him he was going to experience personal and professional growth because it was the right environment, and he’s very grateful. As of today, we’re not considering him leaving, and neither is he.” He told Spanish media.

It has been claimed Sunderland saw January offers of around £17 million and £21 million rejected.

Osasuna are said to be pointing to Muñoz’s release clause, while Real Madrid would reportedly be due 50% of any fee received.

The 22-year-old has never represented Spain at any level, youth or senior. Any breakthrough at international level would likely strengthen Osasuna’s position on price.
