Brazilian midfielder Oscar has retired at 34 because of cardiac problems, Sao Paulo said in a statement on Saturday.
He had been out since late 2025 and was hospitalised for five days in November after fainting during a routine medical examination.
Doctors diagnosed vasovagal syncope, a sudden drop in blood pressure, heart rate and cerebral blood flow, which led him to end his career before a contract due to run until 2027.
Oscar returned to Sao Paulo, his youth club, at the start of 2025 after spells with Chelsea and Shanghai.
He won 48 caps and scored 12 goals for Brazil, playing at the 2014 World Cup on home soil. He thanked Sao Paulo supporters for their backing since his return and during this difficult period, and reflected on a career that took him almost around the world.
