One of the main talking points for Guadalajara in their draw against Necaxa was the Liga MX debut of goalkeeper Oscar Whalley, who is set to guard the Rojiblanco net during the Clausura 2026 Liguilla.
Although he had already made official appearances for Guadalajara in the Concacaf Champions Cup, the goalkeeper experienced his first minutes with the Rebaño in the domestic league during Matchday 16. He started the match and delivered a performance that left positive impressions, especially in a key role within Gabriel Milito’s system: being a constant outlet in buildup play and a reliable option in ball circulation.
From the opening minutes, Whalley showed composure with his feet, as he was frequently sought out by his teammates to restart plays. He finished the match with 26 completed passes—22 in his own half and 4 in the opponent’s territory—while also completing 9 of his 18 clearances. One of those long balls nearly turned into an assist, as he took advantage of a gap in the Necaxa defense to set up Brian Gutiérrez in a shooting position, though the attempt went over the bar.
Defensively, while it wasn’t a match of constant pressure, he stepped up when called upon. He highlighted his performance with a high-quality save on a low shot to the near post, reacting quickly to push the ball away with his right hand. In total, he recorded two saves and also looked confident in the air, using his height (1.89 m) to deal with a dangerous cross.
This first step in Liga MX is significant for Oscar, as he put to rest any doubts about his level and began building competitive rhythm ahead of the Liguilla, confirming that he is ready for the challenge of being the goalkeeper for las Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara.
