Osmar Loss, the former Corinthians coach now in charge at Persepolis, has fled Iran by land with a group of Brazilians as conflict escalated. With the national league suspended indefinitely in round 23, they drove more than 16 hours to the Türkiye border after Iranian airspace was closed.
"We were at breakfast when the attacks began and the match was cancelled at once," he told Globonews. "The first decision was whether to return to Tehran or remain in Isfahan, because attacks there were more intense, and together with the club we chose to go back by road."
"We travelled by bus from Isfahan to the capital and managed to sleep in our apartments, our area was not hit. The next morning we left Tehran for the border with Türkiye and crossed calmly. We went to Van for the night, then flew to Istanbul and finally Madrid."
The crossing involved 20 foreigners, including six Brazilians linked to football, who are now close to returning to Brazil.
"No one has experience of dealing with a city being bombed. It is extremely hard to find safety in a war."
"In our contracts there are force majeure clauses for situations like this, but everything will depend on how long the conflict lasts. We sincerely hope this is brief and that the war ends soon. We hope casualties are minimal and that people can resume their lives with safety and normality."
