Corinthians president Osmar Stabile has defended his trip to the United States during the World Cup, saying he stayed fully engaged in club business while attending a CBF management programme. According to Meu Timao, the itinerary focused on MLS operations and other US leagues.
Stabile faced online criticism after being seen at Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco, the Group C opener, at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Saturday. He said the travel was for work, that technology allowed him to manage duties remotely, and that a World Cup-related CBF immersion required him in person.
In recent days Corinthians have dealt with a transfer ban for missing an instalment owed to Philadelphia Union in the 2024 signing of José Martínez. Fifa also ordered payment of US$ 850,000 to New York City for the loan of Talles Magno, a ruling the club has appealed to CAS.
May wages remain outstanding for contractors engaged as PJs, the first-team squad and coaching staff. There is also a pending sum to Talleres for the 2024 signing of Rodrigo Garro, with a deadline of Tuesday 16 to pay US$ 7 million net.
To meet obligations, Corinthians negotiated financing with OutField. The club will owe US$ 8.5 million, to be repaid in 26 monthly instalments, at a rate equivalent to CDI plus one per cent per year, roughly 15.4 per cent annually. The Cori approved the deal on Friday.
Stabile said the CBF event offered a rare chance to build strategic relationships, adding that most leading Brazilian clubs sent representatives. The delegation visited MLS headquarters on Friday, studied the league’s pull for stars such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, and reviewed investor roles like David Beckham’s at Inter Miami. On Saturday they also observed management structures in other US leagues, continuing CBF work begun in January with visits to the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga.
