Otamendi is again being linked with River Plate, and SuperDepor.com reports the club want the veteran defender as they look ahead.
River remain in the thick of competition. Results have improved under Eduardo Coudet, but the Torneo Apertura defeat to Boca exposed shortcomings in a limited squad.
Names such as Ángel Correa and Lucas Beltrán were floated this week to bolster the team, and the long-running connection to Otamendi has gained traction.
His Benfica manager, José Mourinho, said the decision rests with the player, whether to return to Argentina and River or remain at Benfica.
In principle, Otamendi would like to play for River once the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico concludes. The former Vélez defender is 38 and will retire from Argentina duty after the tournament, which would allow him to realise the dream of playing for the club he supports.
River have struggled across recent transfer windows. During Marcelo Gallardo’s second spell, the club spent heavily, yet many signings failed to meet expectations.
