According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica confirmed on Sunday, 17 May, that Nicolás Otamendi will leave at the end of the season, and hours later the 38-year-old posted an emotional message to supporters.
The Estoril match served as the captain’s farewell appearance.
His message reflected on six years packed with memories, describing a defining chapter filled with joy, challenges, setbacks and lessons, each of them worthwhile.
It also spoke of growth as a player and, above all, as a person, of valued team-mates and staff, and of the spirit and belief he found at Benfica. He expressed pride and gratitude for being welcomed and made to feel part of a family, and closed by stating that the club’s colours will stay with him.
Otamendi joined in 2020/21 from Manchester City and, across six seasons, became a key reference at the club, winning four trophies, one league title, two Super Cups and the League Cup.
