England kicked off the September international break with a bang after beating Hungary 4-0 in Budapest.
Goals from Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice secured an easy win for the Three Lions.
In a game of few chances, it was no surprise that Raheem Sterling ended up making the breakthrough for England.
The Manchester City winger has endured some difficult moments for his country but has now directly contributed to 17 goals (10G, 7A) in his last 11 qualifying matches.
He seems to have found his role under Gareth Southgate and always looks like creating opportunities when others are quiet.
Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice faced (justified) criticism during Euro 2020 for their conservatism and lack of proactivity.
But they were both excellent in Budapest against a side who are combative to put things lightly, with seven interceptions, five tackles and a goal(!) between them.
Jordan Henderson offers plenty and Jude Bellingham will be breathing down their necks, but you are currently looking at England’s best midfield pairing.
England are headed in the right direction – it’s becoming increasingly difficult to say otherwise.
This is a team with experience where they need it, exciting young players coming through and quality where they need it most.
Their ability to manage games has improved dramatically under Southgate and after their Wembley heartbreak in July, the World Cup presents the perfect opportunity for redemption.
