Last season belonged to Ousmane Dembélé (28), but he hopes a future campaign will belong to one of his French teammates.

Speaking in a mixed zone interview on Tuesday, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner said he’d like for Kylian Mbappé (26) to experience what he did in Paris recently.

“He (Mbappé) deserves given the career that he has had. He’s having a very good start to the season; he just keeps scoring. He’s a friend. I hope he continues like this. And I hope that one day he will win the Ballon d’Or,” said Dembélé.

Clearly, the two have a great deal of respect for one another as the captain of Les Bleus penned a heartfelt congratulations to his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate on social media when he won the award. Mbappé has always been in the mix for the Ballon d’Or trophy, but it’s one of the few that’s eluded him in his young career.

The 2018 World Cup champions and 2022 World Cup Golden Boot winner has five goals after two UEFA Champions League matchdays to lead all scorers. Meanwhile, he is also topping the charts in La Liga, netting 10 times for Xabi Alonso’s men.

The Frenchman is also closing on the all-time goalscoring mark for Les Bleus. He’s on 53 goals for the national team, just four fewer than Olivier Giroud (39), who retired from international football at the end of Euro 2024.

A win for Mbappé or any Frenchman next year would give France nine as a nation, surpassing Argentina for the most ever. Mbappé finished seventh in Ballon d’Or voting the last time around.
