Barcelona could be heading towards a dramatic summer twist, with the future of Robert Lewandowski suddenly thrown into serious doubt after fresh developments emerging from Italy.

A report from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that the veteran striker has taken a proactive step regarding his next move by offering himself to AC Milan and signalling a clear willingness to negotiate a potential switch.

The outlet furthers that the player’s entourage has already initiated contact, holding talks with Milan’s management earlier this week to understand the club’s sporting project and financial framework.

What makes this development even more striking is that Lewandowski has reportedly prioritised Milan’s proposal ahead of other lucrative opportunities, including a strong approach from Chicago Fire and continued interest from Saudi Arabia.

What next for Lewandowski?

Lewandowski’s current deal with Barcelona is set to expire at the end of the season, and despite his stature within the squad, there has been a noticeable lack of concrete progress regarding a renewal.

With a decision expected later this month, the silence between both parties is beginning to speak volumes.

This uncertainty has opened the door for movement, and Milan are looking to take advantage.

The Italian giants are exploring the possibility of signing the Polish forward on a free transfer, a scenario that significantly reduces the financial risk of such a high-profile move.

As a result, Lewandowski’s representatives are actively scanning the market, positioning him for what could be one final elite-level challenge in Europe.

Crucially, this is not a player winding down his career. Rather, the intention is quite the opposite.

Lewandowski is not finished

Lewandowski is understood to be seeking another major European project where he can remain competitive at the highest level.

In that regard, Milan, with their ambition to re-establish themselves among Europe’s elite, present an attractive destination.

There are, however, clear obstacles, as salary expectations remain a significant hurdle for Milan.

Yet, the fact that discussions have already taken place and that the player has shown clear openness keeps the door ajar.

Elsewhere, Juventus continue to monitor the situation, having tracked Lewandowski for some time. But for now, Milan appear to be leading the race.
