Out-of-favour Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno is closing in on a return to Spain, as Girona are pushing to sign the Spaniard.

Unai Emery signed Moreno back in the winter window of 2023 on a three-and-a-half-year deal from La Liga side Real Betis.

In his first couple of seasons, Moreno got sufficient game time, but in the last campaign, he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest.

However, he started only eleven Premier League games all season, and he has no future at Villa Park.

Lucas Digne’s new contract makes him the first choice for Emery and Ian Maasten will be competing with him for the starting spot.

Moreno was widely linked with a move in June, with no fewer than four clubs chasing him, including Burnley and Sunderland.

Leeds United then also joined the hunt, but eventually signed Gabriel Gudmundsson as their new left-back.

Now a return to Spain is on the cards as , according to Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto, La Liga side Girona are closing in on securing Moreno.

The Spanish club have lost their highly-rated left-back Miguel Gutierrez to Napoli and now they are set to replace him with the Villa man.

The Villans are offloading players as they look to find wiggle room to bring players amid PSR worries, as Jacob Ramsey has left for Newcastle United and Leon Bailey is closing in on a move to Roma.

Moreno’s exit will bring in some money and will free up the wage bill to help them introduce fresh faces before the window ends.

Villa are looking to sign defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse and they will make a new proposal for the youngster after their first offer was turned down by the Ligue 1 club.
