Fulham right-back Kevin Mbabu is wanted by two unnamed Championship clubs following a lack of game-time at Craven Cottage this season, according to the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (20/01/2023, 11:25am).

The 22-cap Switzerland international was a summer recruit for the Cottagers following their promotion to the Premier League, but he has failed to really feature under Marco Silva, playing just six times in the top flight so far.

He lost his place in the starting 11 to attacking midfielder Bobby De-Cordova Reid, who ended up playing out of position for a number of matches, and Mbabu has not been in a matchday squad since before the FIFA World Cup started.

Two Championship outfits are keen to give Mbabu regular minutes, but they face competition from clubs in France and Germany for his signature, but for all clubs involved his wages are said to be a particular sticking point when it comes to striking a deal.

Where do Fulham play their home games?

The 27-year-old has also been linked with a shock move to Manchester United this week, as well as Italian club Monza showing an interest.

The Verdict

You can imagine that Mbabu is on a decent salary at Fulham, so any Championship club that is keen on him is going to have to cough up some money.

It seems like a waste of his talent to not even be in the matchday squads for the Cottagers, but he has clearly failed to impress in his first half-season at the club.

Even though he hasn’t been playing for Fulham, it’s hard to see him plying his trade in the Championship.

Only a select number of clubs with parachute payments could come close to paying his wages, so it’s far more likely that he would head abroad than go to the second tier of English football, but it will be interesting to see who the mystery clubs are if they are ever named.
