Sheffield United’s disappointing campaign took another frustrating turn on Saturday afternoon as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Wrexham at Bramall Lane.
The Blades will look back on the contest as a major missed opportunity, having dominated large spells but ultimately undone by wasteful finishing and costly defensive lapses.
United could, and arguably should, have been out of sight before the break. Their first big chance arrived in just the 11th minute when Harrison Burrows produced excellent work down the flank, capitalising on a slip from Dom Hyam before squaring perfectly across goal. Patrick Bamford, left completely unmarked just yards out, somehow dragged his effort wide with the goal at his mercy. That moment set the tone for a frustrating afternoon in front of goal.
Wrexham had a great opportunity to take the lead as Lewis O’Brien rose to meet a pinpoint delivery from Issa Kaboré, only to send a free header wide from six yards.
Despite their dominance in the first half, the Blades couldn’t find the breakthrough even when they thought they had. On 33 minutes, Gustavo Hamer powered home a header from an inswinging ball by Jairo Riedewald, but celebrations were cut short by the assistant’s flag.
Wrexham thought they had delivered a dream start to the second half when Josh Windass fired home just 16 seconds after the restart, only for another offside decision to spare United’s blushes.
Moments later, the hosts finally made their pressure count. Andre Brooks saw an initial effort saved by Okonkwo, but reacted quickest on 49 minutes to convert the rebound after Bamford’s shot proved too hot to handle.
At that stage, it felt like a matter of how many United might score. Instead, the game turned sharply.
Wrexham equalised just six minutes later as Josh Windass calmly finished from a low cross delivered by Sam Smith, punishing United’s failure to extend their lead.
The decisive moment arrived 12 minutes from time. Kaboré, influential throughout, delivered another dangerous cross into the box, where Smith rose highest to head home and silence Bramall Lane, completing the turnaround.
The result leaves Sheffield United languishing in 17th place, now 13 points adrift of the play-off positions, with their season in danger of petering out.
After the match, manager Chris Wilder cut a frustrated figure, admitting his side had once again let control slip.
“We find a way to lose, Wrexham find a way to win. They had that quality,” he said to SUTV. “We have to score and take advantage of our good play, but we don’t smell danger and don’t deal with situations we needed to. We should have been out of sight.”
Wilder pointed to his side’s dominance in possession and chances, but acknowledged that their inability to convert opportunities and defend key moments continues to cost them.
“The first 10-15 minutes they found some opportunities and then after that for me we had the lion’s share of control of possession and chances but we have to score and take advantage of our good play.”
Sheffield United are next in action at home against Swansea City next Saturday afternoon.
