Michael Owen believes Rasmus Hojlund is deserving of another opportunity to prove himself at Manchester United after not getting a ‘fair crack of the whip’ in his first two seasons.

The forward is currently on loan with Napoli, where he has enjoyed a revived run of form, until the end of the season.

How and why Hojlund’s exit came to fruition

Last summer, INEOS decided it was time to part ways with Hojlund after he registered only four Premier League goals in 32 appearances.

Such a dismal return prompted them to enter the market once again for a striker, leading to them acquiring a direct replacement in the form of Benjamin Sesko, who signed in a £73 million switch from RB Leipzig.

Sesko hit the 10-goal mark last night when scoring United’s second in a 2-1 win over Brentford, though Hojlund did also achieve the feat in his maiden campaign, scoring 10 goals exactly in 30 matches.

His successor now has four fixtures to exceed the record, after which fans will be crossing their fingers the Slovenian doesn’t drop off in form in the way Hojlund did in his sophomore term.

How Hojlund is faring for Napoli

Over in Naples, the 23-year-old has notched 14 goals and contributed a further six assists in 40 outings.

He also claimed silverware, which he wouldn’t have done had he stayed at Old Trafford, in the form of the Italian Super Cup back in December.

With Napoli now looking to be a shoo-in to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four Serie A finish, they will automatically have to activate Hojlund’s £36m buy clause, spelling the end of his tumultuous stint in M16.

What Owen had to say about Hojlund and Sesko

Yet, Owen is of the belief that the Denmark international didn’t get the chance to be judged fairly during his time with United.

Hojlund’s complete record in all competitions for United

He told Premier League Productions (via the Metro) on Monday night: “I don’t care who you play up front, it’s very hard to judge when the team aren’t functioning.

“Strikers are the end of the chain. If the chain is broken, it’s pointless in many ways. I would love to see Hojlund and see what he can do now.”

“He played in a Manchester United team that was broken and didn’t have any links and played poorly. Who’s to say he’s not really good? He’s doing really well in Italy now,” the Ballon d’Or winner continued.

“Sesko is the same. It was hard to judge, but now that the chain throughout the team is actually working, you are seeing a different type of player.

“I just wonder how much wastage there has been for many years. Everyone says the purchases have been poor, and that might be the case, but sometimes they might not get a fair crack of the whip because they don’t get the service.”
