A strange own goal from Martim Fernandes helped Nottingham Forest earn a 1-1 draw in Porto after the home side had taken an early lead.

Nottingham Forest manager was returning to his former club and was honoured before the game and the Portuguese manager had to see his team start the game poorly.

With just over 40 seconds gone Terem Moffi was denied by Stefan Ortega after Forest had been carved open. The goalkeeper then was able to keep out a weaker rebound effort to keep the scores level.

Indeed, the Premier League side struggled to deal with Porto early on with Murillo just about getting away with a lengthy shirt pull on Moffi. VAR checked to see if it carried on into the penalty box but the Forest defender survived.

With 11 minutes gone the home side took the lead with some excellent build-up play including a flick by Pablo Rosario before William Gomes finished.

However, just two minutes later a truly bizarre own goal levelled the score. Martin Fernandes' back pass to Diogo Costa from all of 40 yards out found its way into the net with Costa unable to get back in time.

To make matters worse for the young defender, just a few minutes later he ended up as collateral damage from a tackle and had to be replaced.

The visitors settled after that equaliser and managed to see more of the ball but Moffi really should have put his side ahead just before the break but his header was straight at Ortega.

Forest did have the ball in the net with just over an hour gone when substitute Igor Jesus looked like he had beat Diogo Costa to a cross before converting. However, the Brazilian's knee clipped the back of the goalkeeper's head as he looked to collect the ball before firing home.

Porto almost took the lead late on when two substitutes combined. First Pepê who took advantage of a mix up at the back before back-heeling into the path of Victor Froholdt but the Danes' effort fizzed just wide.

Francesco Farioli will be frustrated that the game finished 1-1 and his team weren't able to make home advantage count. Forest meanwhile will be happy to have everything to play for in Nottingham.
