Oxford United are close to finalising a loan deal for Luton Town's Christ Makosso, which includes a £3m option to buy.

Oxford United are closing in on sealing a transfer agreement with Luton Town for central defender Christ Makosso, who will link up with former boss Matt Bloomfield at the Kassam Stadium.

The 21-year-old joined the Hatters from Belgian side RWDM for £2m last January in their bid to stay in the Championship, but was ultimately unable to help them achieve their target, despite some impressive performances.

Following the club's relegation to League One, many expected the Congolese defender to be a key player for Luton, but that hasn't been the case, as he's made just 11 league appearances under Bloomfield and Jack Wilshere combined.

Now, according to reports on X from journalist Dan Marsh, Makosso is finalising a loan move to Bloomfield's Oxford, with a view to make the deal permanent in the summer for £3 million, netting the Hatters a tidy profit.

It was revealed on Thursday by Football Insider that Oxford had entered talks to sign Makosso from Luton, who joined the Bedfordshire outfit 12 months ago from Belgian side RWDM, in a deal reportedly worth £2 million.

However, the 21-year-old's year-long stint at Kenilworth Road is now set to come to a close, according to reports from Marsh via X, as talks have moved quickly, and a loan deal is being finalised.

This deal will reportedly include an option to buy worth £3 million in the summer, which would see the Hatters gain a financial profit on a player who hasn't had the desired impact over his short time at the club.

Makosso will now link back up with Bloomfield at the Kassam Stadium to try and achieve what they couldn't last year, survival in the Championship.

Christ Makosso deal is the best for all parties involved - especially Oxford United

Whilst Makosso undeniably has bags of potential, it simply hasn't worked out for him at Kenilworth Road, and his impending move to Oxfordshire is probably the best solution for all parties.

The defender will get a chance to reunite with a manager that clearly rates him highly, and have a shot at more consistent minutes which wouldn't be afforded to him at Luton.

As for the Hatters, they will be hoping that Makosso thrives at Oxford, and they can turn a profit on a player who hasn't excelled for them come the summer - although that won't be guaranteed if the U's can't avoid relegation.
