Oxford United have taken former Reading midfielder Ovie Ejaria on trial as they consider whether offering him a contract.
Oxford United have taken former Reading man Ovie Ejaria on trial as they consider offering the midfielder a contract ahead of their return to the Championship.
The 26-year-old had previously been with Reading, but it was announced back in December that Ejaria had left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Since then, Ejaria has yet to return to the professional game, but he has had trial spells at different clubs, including Plymouth Argyle. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are also one of the clubs believed to have had an interest in him previously.
However, it seems as though the U’s are now taking a closer look at Ejaria, as it was confirmed by Reading Today that the player is on trial with Des Buckingham’s side, which came after footage showed Ejaria as part of the Oxford United group that beat Oxford City in a pre-season friendly on Friday.
It’s unclear how long the former Liverpool youngster will be spending with the newly-promoted side, but the boss is clearly looking at ways to improve his squad ahead of their Championship season.
Of course, it’s hard to judge Ejaria properly as he hasn’t played competitive football for over six months, but if his fitness levels are in place, then it could be a deal worth pursuing for Oxford.
There’s no denying he has been a frustrating individual at times over the years, as Ejaria has talent, but he doesn’t always show it on a consistent basis.
But, Buckingham could be the head coach he needs to tap into that, and it’s obviously a low-risk move when you take into account that there is no transfer fee involved. Plus, it’s unlikely that the player will be in a position to demand a lengthy contract.
So, Ejaria would need to prove himself, and considering he was previously in League One with Reading, he would surely recognise that this is a fantastic opportunity for him to play in the second tier.
From Oxford’s perspective, they aren’t in a position where they can outspend many teams in the Championship, so it’s about searching for bargains, and for players with a point to prove, and Ejaria could be someone who exceeds expectations if this does materialise.
Following on from that, it still feels like there’s more work to do for the U’s after their promotion, and bringing in more creativity and firepower is a priority.
Losing Josh Murphy after his outstanding contribution was a blow, and there has been talk that Cameron Brannagan could also move on as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
So, it hasn’t been the perfect summer so far, even if the recruitment team deserve credit for the additions that have been made, which have certainly beefed up the squad.
