Vasco take a 2-1 lead into the Copa do Brasil semi-final second leg against Fluminense. Rayan and Vegetti scored in the first leg, yet recent derby wins have often hinged on unlikely names. According to Globo.com, focus is on the second leg to secure a place in the final.
In 2024, Victor Luís seized a start at left-back, covering for Lucas Piton, and sealed a 2-0 league win after Vegetti’s opener. It remains his only Vasco goal.
At Nilton Santos in 2023, Vasco beat Fluminense 4-2. Gabriel Pec’s brace is remembered, yet Bruno Praxedes opened the scoring, one of just two goals he managed for the club.
In 2019, Bruno César curled in a superb free-kick at São Januário to turn the game, with Leandro Castán netting the other. That year’s Taça Guanabara was won by Danilo Barcelos when a mis-hit cross went straight in.
The 2018 Carioca semi-final finished 3-2 to Vasco, decided by Fabrício in stoppage time. Giovanni Augusto put them ahead, Pedro levelled, Sornoza made it 2-1, then Paulinho equalised before the late winner.
In 2017 at São Januário, Vasco beat Fluminense 3-2 after Luís Fabiano’s opener was overturned by two from Henrique Dourado. Manga Escobar produced his best display in a Vasco shirt.
Go back to 2003 and the stand-out was left-back Ozéia, little heralded and newly arrived, on a night when Edmundo and Donizete led the attack and Fábio was in goal.
