Leeds United are set to unveil James Trafford as a club-record signing, while permanent interest has emerged in Joe Gelhardt from three Championship sides.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 23-year-old goalkeeper will join from Manchester City for £40m plus add-ons, becoming the third arrival of the summer. He follows free agent Harry Wilson after his Fulham release and centre-back Tarik Muharemovic, signed from Sassuolo for £34m.
Leeds made a move for Julian Brandt after his Borussia Dortmund contract expired, but the Germany international chose Ajax on a three-year deal. A current shortlist includes Marseille’s 26-year-old Brazilian attacker Igor Paixao, although interest has not progressed beyond his inclusion on that list.
An offer remains with Southampton for midfielder Shea Charles, yet no agreement has been reached. Leeds consider it their best and final proposal, and there has been no indication that the Saints have returned to accept it.
Recruitment priorities include a young striker, full-back cover and a central midfielder.
Torino retain interest in goalkeeper Lucas Perri and Trafford’s arrival could clear a path for his exit. For now, Alex Cairns is the only senior back-up after Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier left for Manchester United and Arsenal respectively when their contracts expired.
Up front, 24-year-old Gelhardt has one year left on his deal after an 18-month loan at Hull City, now in the Premier League after last season’s play-off win. Birmingham City, Burnley and Stoke City have all expressed an interest in a permanent transfer.
