João Palhinha returns to Portugal to strengthen Benfica and is happy to be back at a club he believes can fight for titles. Long before arriving at the Luz, one trait defined him, his obsession with ball recoveries.
According to Glorioso 1904, the Portugal international became consumed by tracking his own match statistics from his earliest days, especially in the ball-recovery column.
His competitive edge was evident at Sacavenense. In one match he glanced a header in the six-yard box, collided with the crossbar and, despite concern in the stands, quickly got up and retook his position.
Among team-mates there he was known as “um betinho”. The Lisbon native, whose father owned a car dealership in Arroios, had trials at Benfica but received no further contact.
Even then he was described as a determined, impetuous midfielder. He stood out at Sacavém and drew the attention of Sporting, who backed his potential.
Years later Palhinha returns to Benfica and reunites with Marco Silva, the coach he worked under for two seasons at Fulham.
