Raffaele Palladino explains how Edoardo Bove is replacing Albert Gudmundsson against St. Gallen in the Conference League and what made the difference for Fiorentina.
It kicks off at the Arena St. Gallen at 17.45 UK time (16.45 GMT).
Gudmundsson, Marin Pongracic and Rolando Mandragora are out of action, with Moise Kean only fit for the bench in Switzerland.
There is some confusion over who is taking over the trequartista position behind the striker between Bove and Yacine Adli this evening. Is it still a 4-2-3-1 formation or a 4-3-3?
“Intelligent players know how to have different roles. Bove is starting as a support striker today, but the important thing is rotation and occupying the space rather than systems,” Palladino told Sky Sport Italia.
“It can be a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 on paper, but the crucial thing is occupying the space and having the right attitude, as the fans are really fired up here.”
Something shifted during the half-time break against Lazio, as since then the team has looked completely different. What did Palladino change to really spark Fiorentina into life?
“I cannot take the credit for that, because honestly in those 15 minutes I just changed the tactical system, one that the team had done in the past. I moved from three to four at the back, but the real credit goes to the lads. They had a different attitude, believed we could get that game back on track, but even before that match I saw improvements,” added the coach.
“Of all the matches we’ve played, we only lost to Atalanta and that was one of our best performances too. The comments were negative, but I knew we only needed time and also results to build the enthusiasm we are enjoying now.”
