Palmeiras announce Alexander Barboza signing, see details

Palmeiras announced this Friday (22) the signing of 31-year-old Argentine center back Alexander Barboza as a new addition for the remainder of the season. One of Botafogo’s standout players in their 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores and Brazilian Championship title-winning campaigns, the defender signed a contract with Verdão through December 2028, with an option to extend for one more year. The player will be eligible to play starting from the opening of the next transfer window, on July 20.

Developed in River Plate’s youth academy, Barboza also had spells at Atlético de Rafaela and Defensa y Justicia before playing for Independiente. In 2021, he moved to Libertad, but it was in Brazilian football that he gained greater recognition and became a fan favorite among Botafogo supporters.

Left-footed, Barboza arrives to compete for a spot with Gustavo Gómez, Murilo, Bruno Fuchs, and youngster Benedetti. In Palmeiras’ squad, he will also reunite with defensive midfielder Marlon Freitas, his teammate in Botafogo’s 2024 title-winning campaigns.

I spoke with Marlon Freitas and with (Argentine) Giay, and they told me a lot about the club’s structure and the day-to-day here, which is very good. They made me even more eager to arrive and help the team. The training center is very good, I already know the stadium, and the new pitch turned out really well. With the defender’s arrival, Palmeiras now has its 49th Argentine player in club history. The first player from the neighboring country to wear the green-and-white shirt was midfielder Santiago Novelli, in 1934. Currently, the Argentine with the most appearances for the club is forward Flaco López, with 213 matches, while Juan Raul Echevarrieta remains Verdão’s all-time top Argentine scorer, with 113 goals.
