Palmeiras confirm LIBRA exit, citing governance concerns

Palmeiras have withdrawn from LIBRA, confirming the decision on Tuesday. The club said in a statement that it had formalised its exit from the Liga do Futebol Brasileiro, citing disagreements with the bloc’s current role.

The statement noted the club had taken part actively in talks since 2022 to build a unified league, convinced the project would advance the organisation and strength of the national game. It also acknowledged achievements, including the current television rights agreement.

However, it criticised selfish, at times predatory, conduct that blocked the cohesion needed for shared management and governance. In its view, LIBRA has drifted from its original aims and now operates as a heterogeneous group focused on individual interests.

The exit does not equate to joining any other representative association. For now, the club will track the next steps towards a possible league structure led within the CBF’s institutional framework, and remains open to dialogue to support structural reform.

At the weekend, LIBRA clubs and Flamengo reached an agreement ending a dispute over the split of audience-related revenue, which makes up 30% of the fixed remuneration in Globo’s broadcast contract through 2029. A compromise was found between requests made by Flamengo’s new board since January 2025 and a model preferred by some LIBRA clubs. They now focus on creating the Liga Nacional, enhancing their properties, and strengthening the Brazilian football ecosystem together with the CBF and FFU clubs.
