Palmeiras eye top spot in Brasileiro, return to Allianz with trophy

Palmeiras claimed their 27th Paulista Championship title last Sunday night by defeating Novorizontino at Estádio Dr. Jorge Ismael de Biasi, in Novo Horizonte (SP). Abel Ferreira’s team now has to switch gears to keep fighting at the top of the Brazilian Championship table.

At the moment, Verdão is the leader of the Brasileirão, with ten points earned, followed by São Paulo, who trail due to goal difference: Verdão has seven, while Tricolor has four. In four matches, Palmeiras has three wins and one draw.

Palmeiras last played in the Brazilian Championship on February 25. On that occasion, Verdão beat Fluminense 2-1 at Arena Crefisa Barueri, in the fourth round. Allan and Vitor Roque scored for the São Paulo team.

After that, Palmeiras focused solely on the Paulista Championship. During this period, they beat São Paulo 2-0 in the semifinal, and then overcame Novorizontino 1-0 and 2-1, respectively, in the first and second legs of the state final.

Return to Allianz Parque

During the Paulista Championship, Palmeiras made Arena Crefisa Barueri their home. Allianz Parque was unavailable throughout the tournament due to renovations on the pitch. The work, which began in December, lasted about three months.

The pitch was finally ready last week and has already received FIFA approval, a requirement for hosting matches organized by the CBF and Conmebol. With the trophy in hand, Palmeiras will return to Allianz Parque on Sunday for the match against Mirassol.

The sixth round match of the Brasileirão is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. (Brasília time).

“It’s always a dream to play at Allianz. I’m happy and eager to return, to have our fans singing and creating that atmosphere that always exists at Palmeiras games,” said Flaco López about returning to Allianz Parque.
