Palmeiras left Asunción with a Libertadores quarter-final berth, but attention now swings back to the Brasileirão before another cup tie. According to Nosso Palestra, Abel Ferreira’s side have little time to celebrate as the schedule tightens again.

The Verdão drew 1-1 with Cerro Porteño in the first leg, then won 1-0 in Paraguay thanks to a Gustavo Gómez header to seal progress. It marked the club’s 14th appearance in the Libertadores quarter-finals, the most by a Brazilian team.

In the league, Palmeiras top the table with 48 points from 23 matches, but their lead is down to three. Flamengo have 45 and a game in hand, a gap once at eight now reduced.

Recent domestic form has faltered. Palmeiras drew 0-0 with Internacional, then lost 3-2 to Fluminense at the Maracanã, while Flamengo thrashed Mirassol 5-1 that same weekend to close in.

LDU await after eliminating Mirassol on penalties. The return is in Quito at about 2,800 metres, with the ties scheduled for 8-10 and 15-17 September.

Before that, there is a Copa do Brasil quarter-final against Santos. The first leg is on 26 August at 21:30 Brasília time at Nubank Parque, with the return in the week of 2 September hosted by Santos. It is the third Copa do Brasil meeting between the clubs, with the winners to reach the semi-finals. Santos arrive under pressure in the league, sitting 17th with 22 points from 21 matches before the current round.
