The previous mark was six at the 1974 World Cup, all for Brazil. That squad included Ademir da Guia, Emerson Leão, Luís Pereira, Alfredo Mostarda, Leivinha and César Maluco.

This time none were picked by Brazil. The list is headlined by captain Gustavo Gómez and striker Flaco López. The Argentine raised his level after an excellent 2025 season, is in the best form of his career and will represent Argentina alongside Messi.

Palmeiras had no call-ups in 1930, 1934, 1982, 1990 and 2010. The club’s first World Cup selection was forward Luizinho in 1938.

World champions to wear Palmeiras colours include Mazzola in 1958, Djalma Santos, Zequinha and Vavá in 1962, Emerson Leão and Baldocchi in 1970, Zinho and Mazinho in 1994, and Marcos in 2002. In all, 39 players have been called up, 26 Brazilians and 13 foreigners, with Víctor Diogo the first foreigner selected while at the club in 1986 for Uruguay.
