Palmeiras returned to training on Friday morning at the Academia de Futebol after clinching a place in the CONMEBOL Libertadores semi-finals. Focus now turns to the Brasileiro trip to Grêmio on Sunday, the 28th round at Arena do Grêmio, with an 11:00 kick-off Brasília time.

According to Nosso Palestra, players who featured for more than 45 minutes in Quito followed recovery work indoors, while the rest took part in small-sided technical drills. The staff will manage the squad’s workload after the exertions in Ecuador and the travel involved.

The semi-final spot was secured a day earlier. Palmeiras lost 3-2 to LDU in Quito, then advanced on penalties to set up a meeting with Fluminense.

Goalkeeper Carlos Miguel saved two penalties and was widely celebrated by team-mates. Supporters drew a comparison between one of his stops and Marcos’s famous intervention in the 2000 Libertadores semi-final against Corinthians.

Palmeiras will be without four for the Grêmio match. Paulinho and Jefté are injured, while centre-back Murilo and head coach Abel Ferreira are suspended.

Palmeiras sit second in the league on 56 points, one behind leaders Flamengo, and are targeting victory to maintain their push for top spot.
