Brentford should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-1 draw at Leeds United, yet VAR was right not to intervene, a five-strong panel has found. According to Hounslow Herald, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel delivered split verdicts on the incident.

Kevin Schade put Brentford ahead in the first half at Elland Road last month with a fine finish. In the 66th minute Jayden Bogle trod on Schade’s foot inside the box.

Referee Tony Harrington waved play on, denying the chance to double the lead from the spot. Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised 13 minutes later.

The five-member panel voted four to one that a penalty should have been given. They also decided by three to two that the threshold for a VAR intervention had not been met, so no on-field review was required.

The panel judged there was sufficient contact for a spot-kick, with Bogle initiating a foot-to-foot challenge. Even so, they supported the officials because the incident was not a clear and obvious error under the Premier League’s high bar for VAR.

Keith Andrews’ side remain unbeaten this season after a 3-0 opening-day home win over Tottenham Hotspur and a draw with Sunderland last time out, having again failed to hold a lead.
