Pape Gueye was given a hero’s welcome on his return to Villarreal after scoring Senegal’s extra-time winner in the 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. He reported back to work immediately.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he arrived at the Ciudad Deportiva José Manuel Llaneza around 16:30 on Thursday, smiling and relaxed, and was greeted by team-mates, coaches and club staff. Applause and chants marked his entrance.
After three days of official celebrations in his homeland, Marcelino García Toral had the Senegal international available in Thursday’s session.
There were hugs and laughter before training as Gueye warmly greeted everyone. A guard of honour followed, then team-mates tossed him in the air amid playful shoves and jokes.
With Santi Comesaña suspended, Gueye could go straight into the starting XI against Real Madrid at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Saturday at 21:00. His involvement will depend on how he feels physically.
Villarreal planned for him to work on Thursday afternoon and again on Friday to be integrated into the final sessions before the match.
