RC Lens set the benchmark on matchday 27, while surprise names forced their way into the team of the week. According to L'Équipe, Metz keeper Pape Sy and Auxerre defender Bryan Okoh joined the XI after standout displays.

Auxerre lost goalkeeper Donovan Léon to a red card after six minutes against Brest on Saturday. With 10 men, they still won 3-0, a feat not seen in such circumstances for 30 years.

Swiss centre-back Bryan Okoh, a winter arrival from Lausanne-Sport, opened his Ligue 1 account with two headers, from a corner on 24 minutes then a free-kick on 57.

Usually the understudy, Metz’s Pape Sy started unexpectedly and made eight saves to deny Rennes in a 0-0 draw.

Lens posted the weekend’s best average after beating Angers 5-1. Mamadou Sangaré remains top outfield player on 6.32, and two of his team-mates made the XI, Matthieu Udol at left-back and Florian Thauvin on the right.

Thauvin was left out of France’s final camp before the World Cup, with Didier Deschamps preferring Maghnes Akliouche. At Lyon, Monaco won 2-1 as Akliouche equalised with a right-foot shot then earned the decisive penalty.

Lille also closed on the top three with a 2-1 win at Marseille. Thomas Meunier scored, then crossed for Olivier Giroud’s winner. Others selected were Pierre Lees-Melou at Paris FC, Rasmus Nicolaisen and Cristian Casseres for Toulouse, Nuno Mendes as a winger for PSG, and Joaquin Panichelli, Strasbourg’s hero at Nantes in a 3-2 victory.
