Senegal coach Pape Thiaw criticised the security around his squad’s arrival in Rabat on the eve of the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, scheduled for Sunday at 20:00. He called the situation dangerous for his players.
According to Le Progres, Thiaw used Saturday’s press conference to express anger at how the team were received at the station in Rabat, describing an obvious lack of security.
He argued the situation was abnormal, saying a national team stepping off a train should not be left to mingle with a dense crowd. He warned his players were in danger and that anything could have happened with ill-intentioned people.
Videos on social media showed Sadio Mané and team-mates surrounded by fans without a security cordon, repeatedly asked for selfies and autographs. It took several minutes for the players to reach their bus.
The Senegalese football federation later lodged an official protest over the incident. Hardly ideal preparation before a final.
