Paquetá backs Plata after Flamengo controversies | OneFootball

After a controversial week at Flamengo, Paquetá publicly backed Gonzalo Plata following a 3-1 win over Santos in the 10th round of the Brasileirão.

Coach Leonardo Jardim introduced Plata on 36 minutes of the second half, and the Ecuadorian promptly set up Paquetá for Flamengo’s third. During the celebration, Paquetá urged applause for the number 19. Paquetá later addressed Plata’s situation, according to Coluna Do Fla.

He said those matters are being handled by the board and that he did not know exactly what had happened, while calling Plata a great player, a winner and an idol at Flamengo, stressing the group’s unity.

Paquetá added that acknowledging mistakes does not mean excusing them, noting he too has been held to account. He said expectations are there to draw the best from everyone, that Flamengo rely on Plata, and that the winger came on, assisted and helped the victory.

Plata is in an uncertain spell at the club, having struggled for a consistent run under Jardim, while off-field situations have caused a stir and irritated directors and supporters.

Club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista said there is no intention to move Plata on, adding that his situation is being discussed within the football department.

With Paquetá and Plata available, Flamengo face Cusco in Peru on Wednesday, 08, to open their Libertadores campaign at Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time.
