Flamengo have struck a deal with West Ham to re-sign Lucas Paquetá for 42 million euros, about R$ 260 million, a record fee in Brazilian football in absolute and inflation-adjusted terms, according to Globo.com. The agreement was announced on Wednesday.
Earlier in January Cruzeiro announced the signing of Gerson from Zenit for 27 million euros, about R$ 169 million, which briefly set a national record. Paquetá’s move eclipses it by R$ 91.2 million, a 54% higher outlay.
The Paquetá and Gerson deals underline the shifting financial landscape in Brazil. Last season Palmeiras paid R$ 162.6 million to Barcelona for Vitor Roque, Flamengo spent R$ 151.2 million on Samuel Lino from Atlético de Madrid, and Botafogo invested R$ 143.8 million to sign Danilo from Nottingham Forest.
Four of the 10 biggest Brazilian purchases, adjusted by IPCA inflation, now belong to Flamengo. The club have committed more than R$ 670 million on Paquetá, Samuel Lino, Pedro and Gabigol.
Even so, two landmark moves from leaner years remain among the biggest. Corinthians brought Carlitos Tévez from Boca Juniors in 2004, now worth R$ 136.5 million in updated terms, while Vasco repatriated Edmundo from Fiorentina in 1999 in a deal equivalent to R$ 128 million, enabled by a partnership with the former Nation’s Bank, now Bank of America.
