The Paraguayan government has condemned racist comments made by a senator about Kylian Mbappé, issuing a statement that also reiterated respect for the French people.
As reported by L'Équipe, senator Celeste Amarilla made the remarks after France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay.
On Monday, Mbappé responded on X, calling her contemptible and unworthy of office. He said her reckless racism had eclipsed the team’s historic World Cup effort and shown the worst image of her country.
The government said the comments were deplored and condemned, describing them as contrary to values that underpin peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity.
It reaffirmed a firm commitment to human rights, equality and respect, and to combating racism, xenophobia, intolerance and all forms of hate or discrimination. The statement added that it stood in solidarity with anyone affected and reiterated respect for the French people, noting Paraguay’s long-standing friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding with France.
