Kylian Mbappé has been warned of possible legal action by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, who demanded an apology after he condemned her racist remarks and accused him of gender-based violence during the World Cup.

According to Le Progres, Mbappé on Monday labelled Amarilla despicable and unworthy of office after her comments, before she issued a public response.

In an open letter on Instagram, she said she regretted parts of her message, told Mbappé to retract, and warned she could pursue legal proceedings for gender-based violence. She said she deleted the post.

Amarilla insisted the dispute was between them and said she had nothing against France, citing a French education and trips to the country, including Christmas in Courchevel and New Year in Saint-Tropez.

Paraguay’s president and foreign minister have distanced themselves from her remarks in an effort to avoid a diplomatic incident with France.

Her original post had described Mbappé as a colonised Cameroonian pretending to be French and included crude insults about his background, appearance and intelligence, including a dehumanising comparison to chimpanzees.
