Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe is having an excellent 2026 World Cup, although he has now been dragged into a nasty situation with a Paraguayan politician in the wake of France’s 1-0 victory over the South Americans over the weekend.
Mbappe’s behaviour during France’s victory over Paraguay was criticised by Celeste Amarilla, a senator for the South American nation. She described the Real Madrid man as a “colonised Cameroonian, desperately trying to pass himself off as French” and as a “brute who had not learned to write”.
Understandably, these remarks sparked outrage, and it did not take Mbappe to respond on social media with a strong statement of his own (via CaughtOffside).
“Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”
Rather than leaving the matter at that, Amarilla chose to respond quickly to Mbappe’s statement, in which he demanded an apology from the Real Madrid man, whom she has also threatened with legal action.
“Retract your statements, honour your French citizenship, and apologise. Otherwise, I may begin legal proceedings for gender-based violence.”
And the following day, she has spoken again, telling Mbappe to “watch out for Paraguayans” and that she can “sue him”, as per Rock&Pop Paraguay.
“I’d tell him to watch out for Paraguayans – we already put Ronaldinho behind bars for being a little corrupt. Don’t underestimate me, I can file charges against you.”
It’s unfortunate that Mbappe has been dragged into this matter, although his own response was very commendable. He will now turn his focus to France’s upcoming World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, where he will face Real Madrid teammate Brahim Diaz.
