Paris Brunner, 20, marked his first European start with a header as Monaco beat Gornik Zabrze 3-2 in Poland, a reward for a standout pre-season.
According to L'Équipe, the Germany U20 forward was handed a start as absences forced coach Filipe Luis to rethink. He made it 3-1 on 58 minutes, nodding in Stanis Idumbo’s cross, and completed the match strongly.
Brunner carried over summer form, having scored at Liverpool in a 3-2 friendly on 9 August, also with his head. He finished pre-season as Monaco’s top scorer with five, despite not starting once.
That represented a shift from 11 months ago, when his first Ligue 1 start against Metz ended at half-time, with Adi Hütter substituting him before Ansu Fati hit a brace in a 5-2 win. He totalled only 127 senior minutes, despite top-scorer awards and success at the U17 World Cup and Euro U17 in 2023.
Monaco signed him from Dortmund for €four million two years ago. A 2024 loan to Cercle Bruges did not click. After Gornik, Brunner said the coach encouraged freedom, he operated as a No 10 rather than a No 9, he will keep giving everything, he wants to earn a starting role, and that time will tell.
