Part of Birmingham City’s Wheels Park stadium site earmarked for new conservation area | OneFootball

Part of the 48-acre Wheels Park plot in east Birmingham, where Birmingham City plan a landmark new stadium, is set to be designated for nature conservation.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Birmingham City Council has proposed a “Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation” on the site’s western side after 2021 surveys identified unimproved neutral grassland over former railway ballast supporting notable orchid species, alongside adjacent woodland and scrub linked to canal and rail corridors.

The authority, run by a minority coalition including the Lib Dems and Greens, describes these designations as part of the city’s nature network, offering protections beyond statutory national or international schemes. A report warns that not designating or amending boundaries would increase the risk of challenges to future planning decisions.

The club’s proposed stadium, The Powerhouse, features distinctive chimneys and was unveiled in detail last year. Chairman Tom Wagner has said the ambition is a globally recognised colosseum capable of hosting concerts, while the wider Sports Quarter would add new transport links, a training centre, a women’s stadium, an arena and mixed-use housing.

The draft Birmingham Local Plan sets Wheels Park at the heart of the Bordesley Park Growth Zone, anchored by a new Birmingham City stadium and international leisure attractions. It says any development should support the SLINC with mitigation, and enhance green and blue infrastructure and biodiversity, while delivering high-quality architecture and public realm.

A cabinet report recommends 14 new conservation sites and extensions to six others. Earlier this year, West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker launched a Mayoral Development Corporation to accelerate the £11 billion regeneration of East Birmingham, aimed at boosting investment in projects such as the Sports Quarter.
