Appearing on the Overlap, former Manchester United player Paul Scholes was taking questions from fans of various clubs, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher sitting alongside him.
A Newcastle United supporter put forward the suggestion to Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher: “I would like to ask you, does Eddie Howe deserve a statue?”
Paul Scholes could not withhold a laugh before offering his reply.
Smirking, the former Manure player, who has won two league cup trophies, said: “You won the League Cup f…ing hell! Everyone tries to get knocked out of that all year!”
Very bitter and typical of many connected to that toxic club.
This got me thinking about the late great Brian Clough.
When he was asked what was the most important trophy he had won, his reply was the 1976-77 Anglo Scottish cup.
Nottingham Forest had beaten Orient 5-1 on aggregate in the two-legged final.
Clough said that he valued winning a derided trophy as the club’s first silverware since 1959. He said, “Those who said it was a nothing trophy were absolutely crackers. We’d won something, and it made all the difference.”
It was the springboard for greater achievements to come.
Lets hope that Sunday was the Newcastle United springboard to greater things in the near future, but whatever the small minded irrelevant haters come out with in the media, nothing will detract from the feeling I experienced at Wembley. When the referee blew that final whistle and the celebrations by proper fans started.
I can now slip off this mortal coil with a huge smile on my face.
As for those comments from Paul Scholes, I expect nothing other than this type of thing from him and that irrelevant football club based in the North West of England, who are now on a colossal downwards trajectory, under the stewardship of Sir Jim Ratface.
St James’ Park is already home to monuments celebrating the achievements of record goalscorer Alan Shearer, the legendary “Wor Jackie” and of course Sir Bobby Robson.
