FC Barcelona return to the UEFA Champions League tonight as they will be facing the Portuguese side SL Benfica in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
While the Blaugranes will definitely be the favourites in this tie, there is no doubt that Benfica can also spring a surprise in this game, as was evident from their performance in the League Phase clash between the two sides that ultimately ended 4-5 in the Catalan side’s favor.
However, there was a surprise even before the game, as it was the young defender Pau Cubarsi who took to the microphones for the customary press conference ahead of the UCL games.
The youngster has taken a lot of responsibility on the pitch, and with this appearance in front of the press, he also took the responsibility off the pitch, despite having turned 18 years of age only recently.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Cubarsi believed it was time for him to speak to the press:
“I’m an adult now, and one day I had to come out and talk to you.”
Talking about the match coming up, the Spaniard admitted that he will be facing a good Benfica team which had already created problems for them earlier in the campaign:
“It was tough, as everyone saw. We allowed them too many chances, and now we need to try not to concede goals… Benfica has a great attack, and we need to be careful so they don’t hurt us as much as in the last match. Pavlidis? He’s a very dangerous forward for Benfica, but he’s not the only one.”
The youngster also revealed one of his biggest dreams since he was a child, i.e., winning the UEFA Champions League:
“I’ve dreamed of this since I was a child; it’s something I want to achieve, but for now, it’s about enjoying the moment and trying to do well.”
The young Barcelona defender understood that he has improved significantly since his debut with the first team:
“Since my debut, which was a magnificent night, I’ve improved a lot in every aspect. Now I understand the flow of games better. You have to stay focused every minute of every match.”
There is no doubt that Cubarsi has grown a lot in the last two years, and his first appearance in a press conference only goes on to highlight his growth as a person. He is showing all the elements of growing into a good leader for this team, and hopefully, he will be able to lead the Barcelona defence for years to come.
